June 30, 2006 - More bad news for Cadbury as three more people were hospitalized with the salmonella
Monetevideo bug including a baby and a small child. The Health Protection Agency said last that 31 people in
England and Wales have now suffered food poisoning from the strain, known as SmvdX07, since March 1. Testing
of all Cadbury products has been stepped and government officers are contemplating a possible prosecution.
Sixty miles south of Newburyport the chocolate chip cookie was invented. Ruth Graves Wakefield is credited with
inventing the cookie by cutting up a Nestle semi sweet bar, mixing it in cookie dough and baking it up and serving it
at her restaurant , The Toll House Inn in Whitman , Mass. Andrew Nestle loved the idea and started manufacturing
semi sweet chips which carried her recipe on the back. This article reviews local bakers who carry on the tradition.
June 29, 2006 - How cool is this. The city of Amsterdam and a group of private investors have announced that they
will be building a Charlie And The Chocolate Factory theme park. It will include a giant chocolate fountain and the
city has turned over an abandoned underground rail tunnel.
Norwegian conglomerate Orkla Foods has completed
the acquisition of more than 75% of the shares in Russian-based CJSC Krupskaya Confectionery Company.
Krupskaya has about 1,000 employees and last year did $50,000,000 in business.

June 27, 2006 - A Press Release from  'Belgique,' a Northern California chocolate company that has produced
chocolates to be sold at Chicago's  Field Museum's gift shop during the King Tut exhibit. The chocolate comes
packed two to a box and the chocolate is decorated with edible pure 23 carat gold. It retails for $9.99 a box.
In case
you're looking for a recipe for an all around chocolate frosting this one might be usable. Enstrom Candies Inc., of
Grand Junction, Colorado which purchased the assets of Stephany's Chocolates earlier this month for $1,500,000
has announced they plan on keeping the company going and retaining key personnel. Stephany's has been selling
chocolate in Colorado since 1963 and went into stopped operating April 19th after the death of its owner Hal
Strottman.  
June 26, 2006 - As if it couldn't get worse for Cadbury genetic testing has shown that the salmonella infecting
Cadbury's chocolates has the same genetic fingerprints as that that has been making people ill. Although this is
not 100% proof that those who were stricken ill were definitely made sick from Cadbury product it certainly does
nothing to exonerate Cadbury.
While the FTSE 100 ( London Stock Exchange indicator )registered an advance today
Cadbury shares dropped 1.1%.
June 25, 2006 - The number one news story in the world of chocolate continues to be the Cadbury situation.
Cadbury claims that they did not try to cover up the contamination and sent samples to the Health Protection Agency
and since the level of contamination was so low they were not obligated to report the test results.
Singapore has
recalled any Cadbury products that originated from Great Britain. Most Cadbury product sold in Singapore is
imported from Australia and is not covered by the ban.
More bad news for Cadbury as the United Arab Emirates
have also recalled Cadbury's products from sale.
The U.K. Food Standards Agency plans on launching an
investigation into the recent events surrounding Cadbury's recall of over one million chocolate bars and eggs
.
Cadbury announced today that they will be burying the potentially infected 250 tons of chocolate in landfill. They
have warned children not to embark on a hunt for the chocolate as it could make them sick.
June 24, 2006 - English newspapers are preoccupied with the Cadbury chocolate recall situation. The Cadbury
situation heats up as Cadbury claims even though they were aware of the salmonella contamination in January
they chose not to notify the proper authorities for five months as they felt the contamination was not enough to
cause any potential harm to users of there products. The Food Standards Agency which is the governmental body
that the initial contamination should have been reported to said they felt it should have been reported sooner. The
strain of salmonella, " salmonella montevideo ", which is rather rare was already being investigated as it was
running twice last years rate.
The Daily Mail joins the debate with an article chock full of information about the
Cadbury situation. Cadbury's European president Matthew Shattock defended the company claiming testing had
found the levels acceptable for consumption but one of the countries better known food safety experts , Professor
Sir Hugh Pennington, was surprised that Cadbury delayed for so long as he claims " Research tells us that
salmonella likes chocolate. It seems that, unlike with chicken, a very low dose level can cause illness".
June 23, 2006 - More than a million Cadbury chocolate bars are being taken off the shelves around Britain and
Ireland over fears that they may have been contaminated with salmonella. The affected products are the 250g Dairy
Milk Turkish, Dairy Milk Caramel and Dairy Milk Mint bars, the Dairy Milk 8 chunk, the 1kg Dairy Milk bar, the 105g
Dairy Milk Buttons Easter Egg, and the 10p Freddo bar. The levels of contamination are much lower than needed to
produce a health risk but Cadbury chose to take the safe path and safeguard their customers. The contamination
was traced to a leaky pipe.
Zetar, the owner of Norfolk chocolate manufacturer Kinnerton, has announced the
acquisition of snacks food business Humdinger for up to £12.9m.
June 22, 2006 - The Miami Herald has a piece on wine and chocolate pairings that is quite informative. Australian
customs seized a lot of 500 chocolate bars and other items that have the ability to deliver electric shocks. Novelty
items intended to deliver an electric shock including chocolate bars, cigarette lighters, dice, toy pistols, calculators,
mobile phones, staplers and torches.
June 20, 2006 - The polling has been done and American's have weighed in with their opinions on pie. What's the
best. What pie is more likely to conjure up feelings of romance etc.
The Seventh Annual Chocolate Classic,
presented by the Easter Seals of Southern Georgia  will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the James H. Rainwater
Conference Center off Norman Drive in Valdosta. Guests will indulge in decadent desserts and champagne with

In Hobart, Australia Cadbury is expanding its  chocolate factory. In Fulton New York the saga of the
struggling New York Chocolate and Confections Company continues. The workforce which numbered 72 in
January is now down to 12 with the firing of plant manager Jerry Lamphere and CFO Bob Capella.

June 13, 2006 - A recipe for chocolate meringue pie. Cocoa bean shell mulch is becoming more and more

rural areas of north Bihar. Children have been big fans of the new chocolate bars.
President Vaclav Klaus of the
Czech Republic has signed a bill lowering the VAT on chocolate, coffee and tea making life a lot easier for Czech
chocoholics.
Masterfoods is spinning there most popular lines off into new dark chocolate versions. Some of the

June 06, 2006 - Thorntons, the chocolate maker, has named John von Spreckelsen, the retailer who led a revival at
supermarket Somerfield, as its new chairman.
Chocolat is a fund raiser for the Florida based Refuge House.
Refuge House provides shelter to women and children in the Tallahassee area. At least eight local chefs will
provide chocolate flavored foods for the event.

June 05, 2006 - Sunday July 30 th, Quebec, Canada will be the scene for the  "Cacao Diseases: Important Threats
to Chocolate Production Worldwide" symposium which will
be held at the joint annual meeting of the American
Phytopathological Society, Canadian Phytopathological Society and the Mycological Society of America. Twenty
percent of the world's cocoa crop is destroyed by plant disease every year and this symposium hopes to address
the causes and possible cures.
June 04, 2006 - Oh why oh why am I not living in Virginia. A team of researchers under a grant from the Hershey
Company are conducting a study where subjects are provided with six weeks of free daily chocolate and $100 for
completing the study. The study is looking for a link between chocolate consumption and its effect on on reasoning,
blood pressure and cholesterol.
